Weather: Overnight snowfall could be largest of the season, will disrupt morning commute

A mid-winter storm will drop up to six inches of snow across Colorado Springs and El Paso County overnight, and could potentially be the snowiest day of the season thus far.

Soft, slushy snow is expected to pick-up after 10 p.m. in southern Colorado and continue into the early to mid-morning Thursday, leaving roads slick and covered in snow throughout the morning commute.

Traffic fatalities in Colorado's work zones are up; officials urge drivers to stay vigilant

“The morning commute will be affected and people will need to take extra time during the commute and prepare for winter driving conditions,” said Mark Wankowski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Pueblo.

The heaviest amount of snow accumulation is expected to be in western Colorado Springs where three to six inches could fall, while up to four inches are expected across the rest of the city and El Paso County.

So far this season, the heaviest snow fall recorded in Colorado Springs was on Feb. 17 when 3.3 inches fell from the sky, but that could easily be broken Wednesday.

“The western parts of Colorado Springs are more likely to get the higher accumulation, but a season high is possible,” Wankowski said.

Despite the morning commute being potentially impacted by the overnight snow fall, Wankowski says some afternoon sun should begin to thaw out the roads and melt some snow as high’s are expected in the low-40’s.
