RMNP system crashes on first day to reserve backcountry camping permits

Rocky Mountain National Park will resume reservations for backcountry camping permits within the park next week after the reservation system crashed Monday morning.

Monday was supposed to be the first date to make reservation requests for the summer season; however, RMNP said the system was experiencing “technical difficulties” at 9:45 a.m., less than two hours after requests opened.

“We apologize for the inconvenience,” RMNP said in a statement. “The Pay.gov website is currently down and unable to process payments. Pay.gov is working to resolve this issue.”

RMNP intends to reopen requests Monday, March 8 at 8 a.m. Reservation requests can be made at nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/wilderness-camping. The link will not be available until March 8.

Reservation requests will be processed from March 8 through March 15.

Requests can only be made online. In-person requests are not available due to the COVID-19 pandemic and phone, mail, email and fax requests will also not be accepted, officials said.

RMNP will have less availability for backcountry camping this season due to damage caused by the Cameron Peak and East Troublesome wildfires last year. Around 30,000 acres of the park were burned during the fires.

Parts of RMNP including the Green Mountain and Front Lake trails are still closed off; however, some trails and campsites could reopen in time for the camping season in May as park staff clear debris, officials said.

Camping permits are required for backcountry camping year-round and the permits typically run out in many areas of the park from May through October.

Permits include trip planning advice and information from the park’s wilderness office staff, including requirements for food storage, mountain weather, hazards and “Leave No Trace” ethics.

Each reservation requires a $30 wilderness administrative fee from May 1 through October 31, in addition to the park entrance fee of $25 per vehicle.
