Reports of shots fired at Centaurus High School a false alarm

Centaurus High School

Centaurus High School was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning after a report of shots fired in the school that was later determined to be a false alarm, the Lafayette Police Department said.

No students or staff were reported injured at the school at 10300 W. South Boulder Road.

Police said a teacher thought they heard shots fired within the school just before 10:30 a.m., prompting the lockdown.

At the time of the lockdown, around 30% to 35% of the total student population was inside the school as the Boulder Valley School District is still using a hybrid schedule, said Randy Barber, the chief communication officer.

Lafayette police Deputy Chief Brian Rosipaila said several agencies responded to the school.

“Every agency from the Boulder County area responded along with outside agencies such as Colorado State Patrol and the FBI,” Rosipaila said.

After a sweep of the school, police said they believe the incident was a false alarm. A second search of the school also took place.

The school was moved to lockout as a precautionary measure, Barber said.

Angevine Middle and Ryan Elementary schools were placed on secure lockout during the investigation but returned to normal operations about 11:30 a.m.

South Boulder Road was closed near the school while police investigated but has since reopened.

Counseling services were provided by the district for any student or staff member.

“Even with an ending as a false alarm, it’s a traumatic situation for our students and staff, and we want to make sure to give them the opportunity to have counseling if they need it either as a one-on-one or group session,” said Barber.
