Weld County deputy saves teenager from apparent overdose
A 19-year-old man suffering from an apparent drug overdoes on Saturday night was saved by a Weld County sheriff’s deputy.
Law enforcement officials were dispatched to a home in the 10700 block of Weld County Road 14 1/2 just west of Fort Lupton after the victim’s family said they found him unresponsive in his bed about 10:45 p.m. Saturday.
Deputies arrived and were told they believed the man might be overdosing on fentanyl and Xananx, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office said.
They found the man lying on the bathroom floor, grasping for air, which led deputies to administer a 4-milligram dose of Narcan nasal spray — a drug used to combat overdoses — that made the victim become more alert.
Minutes later, an ambulance arrived and medical staff administered another 2 milligrams of Narcan before taking the victim to Platte Valley Medical Center.
The man is expected to survive, officials said.
Members of the family later told investigators that they found the victim lying in his bed unresponsive and moved him to the bathroom to pour water on his head in an attempt to wake him up.
At the same time, another family drove to Fort Lupton and searched multiple stores for Narcan, officials said.
After an hour had passed and the victim was still unresponsive, the family called 911.
Officials are urging residents who find themselves in a similar scenario to call 911 immediately.
“This call could have had a much different outcome,” said Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams. “The Weld County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to call 911 for help at the first sign of an emergency.”
