The city of Denver and Denver Animal Protection is reminding owners to protect their pets from the impending weekend snowstorm or risk receiving a fine and jail time.

Forecasts predict that Denver could get between 15 to 25 inches of snow from Friday to Sunday, with freezing temperatures expected. Even harsher conditions are predicted in the foothills and east of the Continental Divide.

Officials urge pet owners to prepare for the storm and plan to keep pets inside.

Failure to do so could result in an animal cruelty or neglect charge which carries a fine of up to $999 and/or a year in jail.

“If the weather is too bad for you and your family, it’s also not safe for your pets,” Denver Animal Protection said. “Protect them from the dangers heavy snow and cold temperatures create — including fallen trees and power lines.”

If pets must be outdoors for extended periods, city ordinances require that pets have adequate outdoor shelter like a doghouse or porch to escape the weather.

Denver Animal Protection suggests insulating the shelters or providing doggie doors into a garage or warm space to keep pets protected.

Denver Animal Protection also recommends removing snow from pets’ fur and paws when they come inside, keeping snow and ice remover out of reach of pets and not letting pets roam unaccompanied in heavy snow.

As this weekend’s storm has the potential to trap many in their homes, officials also suggest stocking up on pet food and medicines in advance and preparing for a power outage with backup generators.

In case a pet was to escape, collars and tags should always be worn and kept up to date.
