Steel projectile flings into vehicle on I-225, resulting in fatal crash

Aurora Police Department

A 44-year-old woman is dead following a motor vehicle accident on Interstate-225 after a steel projectile was launched into her SUV, according to the Aurora Police Department.

Police previously believed the accident was caused by a medical emergency, but during the investigation learned that a projectile from an unknown origin entered the drivers window of a Cadillac SUV.

The projectile struck the sole occupant of the Cadillac and caused the victim to collided into another vehicle, and then the concrete divider barrier.

First responders were dispatched to I-225 near East Colfax Avenue at 10:12 a.m. Friday after reports of a vehicle accident.

Upon their arrival, they located the woman and immediately transported her to a local hospital where she died of her injuries, APD officials said.

Information about the victim will be released at a later date by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.

An initial investigation of the accident closed two lanes of I-225 for several hours.

Police said alcohol, drugs and speed were not contributing factors in the crash.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dash cam footage to contact the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.

An investigation is ongoing.
