Longmont city facilities to close Monday because of snowstorm

Longmont Public Library -- winter

The city of Longmont is closing all of its public facilities Monday, extending its weekend closures in response to the snowstorm that hit the state Saturday.

Longmont has received 13 inches of snow as of 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Accumulation is predicted to increase by up to 10 more inches as snowfall continues into early Monday morning.

“Although our city snow crews are doing a great job of clearing main drive lanes, the best thing to do is close our facilities,” said City Manager Harold Dominguez. “That will help keep cars off the roads and allow the plows to continue.”

Dominguez said in addition to the snow on the ground, high winds have made visibility dangerously low on many roads.

“The best thing for the public to do is to stay off the roads,” Dominguez said.

Facilities that will be closed Monday include all recreational facilities, all golf courses, the Longmont Museum, the Longmont Public Library, the Senior Center, the Youth Center, the Button Rock Preserve and the Union Reservoir.

The Longmont Civic Center, Service Center, Municipal Court, Development Services Center, Safety and Justice Center and Vance Brand Municipal Airport will also be closed.

There will be no trash, recycling or compost collection Monday as the Waste Diversion Center will be closed. All waste collection routes will be one day behind normal collection schedules this week.

The Longmont Power and Communications electric crews will continue to take calls and respond to power outages throughout the city. Since 5 a.m. Sunday, around 60 power outages have been reported, officials said.

Residents experiencing power outages should call 303-651-8386 to reach LPC.
