HazMat crash closes interstate lanes in Colorado canyon with ‘no estimated time of reopening’
A crash involving a vehicle that was carrying hazardous materials closed down westbound lanes of I-70 in De Beque Canyon as clean-up is underway. The wreck occurred on Sunday, but the closure remains in place as of a Monday morning update.
During this stretch, Interstate 70 travels in close proximity to the Colorado River. Details about whether or not any sort of hazardous materials got into the river as a result of the wreck have not been released.
The Monday morning update informed travelers that an extended closure is expected and that there is no estimated time of reopening. Westbound travelers can travel a detour route by taking Exit 62, traveling west on Mesa County 45.5 road to CO 65. Colorado 65 will then allow travelers to head northbound back to I-70.
A Google Traffic Maps alert indicates that the closure will be in place until midnight, though this is unofficial information and should be considered as such. The closure is subject to lifting before this time or extending past it.
The map below shows where the closure is in place:

It’s worth noting that wide loads are not allowed on the detour route. Vehicles with wide loads must wait at the closure for a time they’re able to pass.
De Beque Canyon is located just east of Grand Junction, Colorado.
