Lost, out-of-bounds snowboarder rescued off Aspen Mountain

An intoxicated snowboarder was rescued late Saturday night after becoming lost while traveling out of bounds at Aspen Mountain Ski Resort, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Deputies said they were notified at 7 p.m. that a snowboarder had traveled out of bounds while riding down Ruthie’s Run, a blue square trail for intermediate riders. The caller said the snowboarder was lost and possibly injured.

The sheriff’s office, Aspen Mountain Ski Patrol and Mountain Rescue Aspen were notified and sent rescuers to search for the snowboarder.

Nearly an hour later, officials determined the snowboarder was in the Keno Gulch off Aspen Mountain, in the Castle Creek Valley. Rescuers entered the field and made voice contact with the snowboarder at 9:37 p.m.

The snowboarder, a 39-year-old man from Aspen, said he was cold, tired and intoxicated but uninjured, deputies said.

Rescuers reached the snowboarder just after 10 p.m. It took more than an hour to get the snowboarder out of the gulch because of the rugged terrain and his level of intoxication, deputies said.

The rescue was completed at 11:40 p.m. No one was injured.

“Backcountry travel during the winter can be dangerous under the best of circumstances; however, doing so alone and unprepared while under the influence of alcohol is a recipe for disaster,” the sheriff’s office said.
