Boulder shooting victim Rikki Olds: Bubbly, nurturing, ready to help you smile

Rikki Olds

Rikki Olds was the light of the Olds family.

Her uncle, Robert Olds, said whenever she came to a family gathering, they never knew what color her hair would be, or if she had a new tattoo. But that was Rikki.

“Rikki lived life on Rikki’s terms and not anybody else’s terms, and her life was cut short,” Robert Olds said during a news conference in Lafayette on Wednesday morning.

Rikki Olds was one of 10 victims killed during a mass shooting at a King Soopers in south Boulder on Monday afternoon.

On Wednesday, Robert Olds spoke on behalf of the family to share stories about his 25-year-old niece and share who she was as a person.

“She was one of a kind,” Robert Olds said. “She’d come to the house and joke around and laugh, and would start laughing so hard she would snort.”

Carlee Lough, a friend and co-worker of Olds at King Soopers, said she was the person everyone went to during trying times.

“She would do anything to make (you) smile,” said Lough. “If you needed a pick-me-up, you knew where to go.”

Rikki Olds worked at King Soopers as a store manager after originally pursuing a career in nursing at Front Range Community College.

However, in 2016, those plans changed and she found a career where she could continue to help those around her at King Soopers.

“It stems from her relationship with her mother, wanting to be that nurturing person that she didn’t get when she was younger,” said Robert Olds.

Rikki Olds grew up in Lafayette and graduated from Centaurus High School. She enjoyed the outdoors in a number of ways, including hiking, softball and golf that she learned to love through her grandfather, Robert Olds said.

Although the family is processing the life of their “bubbly” Rikki, Robert Olds said their family appreciates the “overwhelming” support shown.

And while time will never bring their family member back, but they’ll do their best to remember the good times.

“There’s a hole in our family that will never be filled,” Robert Olds said. “We’ll try to fill it with memories, but it’s tough.”
