Meet City Cast, Denver’s new daily podcast looking to turn residents into community members

city cast host Bree Davies

Bree Davies is a born and raised Denverite, well known in the community for her work in journalism, arts advocacy and urban planning. Now, she’s taking on the role of host of Denver’s newest podcast series to help other residents become as engaged as she is.

Davies’ daily podcast “City Cast” launched in Denver on March 25, providing daily news and in-depth looks at the Denver community through the people who know it best.

“City Cast” is funded by the former owners of the Washington Post and headed by journalist David Plotz from Atlas Obscura and Slate Magazine. With branches in Denver and Chicago, “City Cast” wants to be a national network, connecting locals to the cities they live in.

“We want to be that approachable person that you go to in your community who just knows what’s going on,” Davies said. “We want to relay that information to you in a concise and easy way.”

Davies said the role of the podcast is to be Denver’s designated know-it-all neighbor, popping their head over your fence to fill you in on the city’s daily doings.

“City Cast” is targeted toward residents who want to be engaged in their community, but feel like they don’t have the time, inviting them to get involved in Denver’s larger conversations – from City Council meetings to climate change to local bands.

The website boasts the podcast is “guaranteed to make you feel more connected to Denver, whether you’ve been here for six months or six generations.”

“City Cast” publishes morning newsletters and 15- to 20-minute podcast episodes every weekday at 6 a.m.

So far, topics have included gun violence following the Boulder shooting, a 20-year-old Denver restaurant that might be closing, Denver’s changing relationship with e-scooters and COVID-19 vaccine eligibility for people with disabilities. Each episode opens with daily headlines.

“Our biggest goal is to bring as many perspectives as possible to the listener, while also covering as many different topics as possible,” Davies said. “The opportunity is just too incredible.”

In addition to Davies, the Denver “City Cast” team includes newsletter editor Peyton Garcia and producers Xandra McMahon and Paul Karolyi. In 2017, Karolyi won Westword’s Best Denver Podcast award for his podcast “Changing Denver.”

The “City Cast” episodes are personal and fun, centering on conversations with real Denverites, ranging from experts in their field to experts in their neighborhood.

Davies said that, more than anything, “City Cast” want to be accessible, telling the news in a way people understand on a platform they enjoy – something Davies has been doing on her own for 15 years.

After earning a journalism degree from Metropolitan State University, Davies worked for The Denver Post, The Onion A.V. Club, Westword, PBS12 and had her own podcast called “Hello Denver, are you still there?”, in addition to leading countless community conversations discussions on social media.

Now, all of those elements are coming together in one platform.

“How can we tell a variety of stories through a variety of voices?” Davies said. “That’s what we’re looking to do.”

“City Cast” episodes are available for free at citycast.fm/denver and everywhere podcasts are played. Residents can send topic ideas to Denver@CityCast.fm.
