One dead, toddler hospitalized following accident in Longmont

Ambulance

A 28-year-old Longmont woman was killed and a toddler was injured following a crash in Longmont Thursday evening.

Longmont police and fire were dispatched to East 17th Avenue and Alpine Street after a report of a two-vehicle collision was made at 5:57 p.m., according to a release.

A preliminary investigation by officials revealed that a Ford Explorer traveling east on East 17th Avenue at Alpine Street and a Subaru Forester heading north entered the intersection at the same time and collided.

As a result of the crash, the Explorer rolled over and ejected the driver, who was pronounced dead on-scene, and a toddler, according to the release.

The 3-year-old boy was found by officials and taken to a local hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Police said they believe neither the woman nor the toddler were wearing seatbelts.

The driver of the Forester sustained minor injuries and was released on scene.

The initial investigation suggests that the Explorer failed to yield to the Forester and entered the intersection on a red light, according to the release.

It is not known if speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Information regarding the people involved in the crash has not been released.

The Longmont Department of Public Safety is using this time to remind drivers that seatbelts and child restraint devices save lives. For more information regarding child car seats click here.
