Colorado Parks and Wildlife uses mobile app to encourage families to get outdoors

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is taking a new approach to get families and kids outside, launching a mobile app that allows users to complete different ‘missions’ at more than a dozen state parks.

The Agents of Discovery app, in partnership with the educational mobile gaming platform, uses augmented reality to task users with specific activities in the parks such as an educational version of Pokémon Go.

“Our missions at Barr Lake are all about the eagles right now,” said park manager Michelle Seubert. “This is a great activity for families to get out on the trail and explore these self-guided missions to learn about the park.”

In addition to Barr Lake State Park, missions are available at Chatfield, Cheyenne Mountain, Crawford, Eleven Mile, Jackson Lake, Lake Pueblo, Mancos, Ridgway, St. Vrain, Staunton, Steamboat Lake and Trinidad Lake state parks.

Missions include scavenger hunts, junior ranger training and lessons on young wildlife, the night sky and bodies of water. At-home missions are also available for the Staunton State Park feature.

The Agents of Discovery app is available for download via the App Store and Google Play. Missions are free to play and, once downloaded, do not require Wi-Fi or a data connection.
