Colorado Avalanche starting goaltender Philipp Grubauer was added to the COVID Protocol-Related Absences list Wednesday. Coach Jared Bednar said Grubauer’s timeline is the usual one — do health testing after 10 days and return to the building on the 14th day.
Grubauer will be sidelined for much of the remaining regular season. There are 13 games left, with six after Grubauer’s projected return date.
“He enters the protocol and he has to do what everyone else has done,” Bednar said.
Bednar said Grubauer wasn’t feeling well Tuesday, the day after he was in net for a win over the Arizona Coyotes.
“But a lot of our guys weren’t,” Bednar said. The team had been vaccinated Monday night.
Grubauer and rookie defenseman Bowen Byram are the two Colorado players on the list. On Friday, Byram’s positive test was announced and a game against the Anaheim Ducks went on as scheduled. Morning skates were canceled after both positive tests.
“The person is in isolation and all other staff/players have been negative at this time,” a statement posted Wednesday to the Avalanche’s Twitter account read.
Grubauer has started 33 of 42 games this season and is tied for the league lead in shutouts.
The Avalanche acquired two additional goaltenders through trades this season, Jonas Johansson and Devan Dubnyk. They could fill in while Grubauer is unavailable. Dubnyk went in for Grubauer on Wednesday in St. Louis.
“It’s funny, you’re like — ‘Oh, I get to play tonight.’ And then you’re like, ‘Well, I’ll be playing for a while here, I guess,’” Dubnyk said after the game.
Bednar said Dubnyk wasn’t vaccinated Monday and was feeling better than most of the team.
“I was proud of his game and I think he’s only going to get better as he spends more time with us,” the coach said.
