Man suspected in Thornton crime spree found dead after standoff at Westminster apartment complex

A man believed to be a suspect who went on a crime spree in Thornton last week was found dead after an hourslong standoff at an apartment complex Wednesday night, the Westminster Police Department said.

The suspect is believed to be 36-year-old Raymond Quintana, who was wanted on numerous charges related to a crime spree last week in which he was accused of pointing a handgun at Thornton Police Department officers.

A Westminster SWAT team responded about 6 p.m. Wednesday on reports that Quintana was at the Edgewood Apartments in the 6900 block of Stuart Street.

A shelter-in-place order was issued for the complex as officers tried negotiating with the suspect, but communications broke down about 11 p.m.

The SWAT team entered the apartment and found the man suffering from a single gunshot wound that is believed to be self-inflicted.

Westminster police said no officers fired their weapons.

The Adams County Coroner’s Office will release the official identification.

An arrest warrant was issued for Quintana last week for attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, burglary, felony menacing, aggravated motor vehicle theft and eluding police.

Police said Quintana was involved in a burglary at an apartment near 9700 Welby Road at 8:27 a.m. Friday.

When officers arrived, a witness identified Quintana, who allegedly pointed a handgun at officers, ran to a car and drove off.

Officers pursued the vehicle, which eventually crashed into a fence at 115th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard.

After the crash, officers attempted to apprehend Quintana, who again allegedly pointed a handgun at officers. Two officers then fired at Quintana, police said.

Police do not know if Quintana was hit by the shots.

After the shots were fired, Quintana ran into the surrounding neighborhood, at one point running through a house. He stole a gold Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was later recovered in the 10300 block of Tenby Lane, police said.

Police searched the area for several hours but were unable to find Quintana.
