A 22-year-old woman was arrested Sunday in connection to the fatal shooting of her husband in the Montbello neighborhood, the Denver Police Department said.
The suspect, Janet Juarez, is being held for investigation of first-degree murder. According to a probable cause statement, Juarez claims the shooting was done in self-defense.
Police said the shooting happened about 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the 4900 block of Granby Street. The victim, an unnamed 22-year-old man, was treated for gunshot wounds but pronounced dead minutes later.
The victim’s identity will be released by the Denver Medical Examiner’s Office after his family has been notified.
According to the statement, Juarez and the victim had been married since December and have a child together.
A neighbor told police that she heard two gunshots, looked outside and saw a woman holding a gun next to a car in a driveway, the statement said.
She heard one more shot and saw the woman pick up a diaper bag and walk in the house.

Two other witnesses said Juarez admitted to them that she shot her husband immediately after the shooting, telling the witnesses that he was trying to kill her, the statement said.
The shooting took place outside of the house of one of the witnesses, a 58-year-old relative of Juarez’s. He told police that Juarez sometimes stays at his house when she and her husband fight.
He said the husband had been physically and emotionally abusive toward Juarez during their relationship, the statement said.
He and the other witnesses reported that Juarez said her husband was trying to kill her and kidnap their child, and that they had wrestled over the gun before the shooting.
Detectives found a 9mm handgun in the front room, three spent cartridge casings in the back seat of the vehicle in the driveway and a live bullet under the vehicle, the statement said.
Juarez is being held in the Denver City Jail for processing.
