Series of threats to northern Colorado high school lead to arrest

Arvada Police Department

One juvenile is in custody after several “threats of violence” to Ralston Valley High School were reported to law enforcement officials using the state’s Safe2Tell reporting model, the Arvada Police Department said.

Officials were notified about two specific threats to the school on Tuesday about 10:30 a.m., prompting the school to be put on secure alert status, said Dave Snelling, a police spokesman.

The school resource officer along with a patrol team from the police department responded and secured the school. The school was taken off secure alert status at 11:40 a.m.

Investigators learned from the state’s attorney general office regarding the threats and were able to identify one suspect, who was taken into custody on campus, Snelling said.

Police are not releasing any information regarding the suspect. It is not known whether the person is a student.

“This person was seen by other students, probably talking to the police, so if it’s that 1% chance that this is not the right person, we don’t want to take the chance and wreck their world,” Snelling said.

The arrest comes after secure alert status was initiated at the school for threats of violence.

Multiple reports were made about noon Monday and prompted the school to enter secure alert status and a “large number of officers and R1 security units” responded.

About 2 1/2 hours later, officials secured the school and coordinated with administrators to release students.

An investigation is continuing.
