Man rescued after falling at least 2,000 feet in San Miguel County

Rescue from Wilson Peak

A 37-year-old New Mexico man was rescued Tuesday afternoon after falling while skiing on the north face of Wilson Peak. 

According to the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office, the man and a friend were skiing the north face of Wilson Peak when he fell and tumbled an estimated 2,000 feet, and landed out of sight of his friend. 

The man was located and transported onto a medical helicopter and flown to Telluride Regional Airport shortly after 4 p.m. The victim was immediately transported to Telluride Medical Center with multiple traumatic injuries, but he is expected to survive, according to the release.

The rescue mission took five hours to complete and involved more than a dozen rescuers from various agencies.
