The Fort Collins Police Department announced they found explosive material inside a backpack Thursday, which result in residents and businesses to be evacuated for 2 1/2 hours.
Officers were dispatched to the commercial storage facility in the 4800 block of Boardwalk Drive after employees found a suspicious backpack with “powdery chemical substance,” while emptying an abandoned unit, FCPD official said in a news release Friday.
Poudre Fire Authority and the Northern Colorado Bomb Squad responded to the scene and out of a precaution issued an evacuation order for the surrounding area from Bluestem Court, just north of Meadow Drive to Oakridge Drive.
The NCBS identified the substances inside the backpack to be a pre-mixed ammonium nitrate/fuel oil, which is an industrial explosive frequently associated with mining.
Following the backpack’s recovery, the evacuation order was lifted, but an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Federal Bureau of Investigations continued their initial investigation for approximately 8 1/2 hours, according to the release.
