A motorcyclist was killed Thursday after a crash with a car in Aurora, the city’s second fatal motorcycle crash in one week, the Aurora Police Department said.
Police said the motorcyclist was driving north on South Ventura Street at around 1:18 p.m. through a sharp curve when he tried to pass the vehicle in front of him by entering the eastbound oncoming lanes of East Yale Avenue.
After entering the lane, the motorcyclist was struck by an oncoming car driving east on East Yale Avenue.
The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries. His identity will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office after his family has been notified.
The driver of the car and its multiple occupants were all uninjured. The driver remained at the scene of the crash and was not speeding or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police said.
Motorcyclist dies following crash on Fitzsimons Parkway in Aurora
Police said the cause of the crash was the motorcycle overtaking another vehicle while on a sharp curve.
This crash comes after, on May 1, an unresponsive man was found on the ground next to his motorcycle near North Fitzsimons Parkway and North Victor Street. The man later died and police are still investigating how he crashed.
In Aurora, nearly half of all motorcycle accidents since 2015 have resulted in the motorcyclist dying or sustaining serious injuries, according to APD.
Police urge drivers to check their blind spots for motorcycles and for motorcyclists to wear glasses, helmets and gloves while riding.
Thursday’s crash is still under investigation by the Aurora Police Traffic Investigations Unit. Anyone who witnessed the crash and has not yet spoken to police is asked to call APD at 303-627-3100.
