Suspect identified in shooting of 2 men in Denver’s Civic Center neighborhood

The suspect in Sunday afternoon’s double shooting in the Civic Center neighborhood has been identified as 27-year-old Gabriel Jacob Samora, the Denver Police Department said.

Samora is being held for investigation of two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Police said the shooting happened at around 4 p.m. at the intersection of East 11th Avenue and Broadway. According to the probable cause statement, Samora got into a verbal altercation with one of the victims, a 26-year-old man.

During the altercation, Samora allegedly fired one round from a .380-caliber handgun, striking the man in the leg. The altercation and shooting were captured on nearby security cameras, the statement said.

After shooting the man, Samora ran away and was chased by two people. The people caught up to Samora a few blocks away and the three got into a physical fight.

During the fight, Samora allegedly fired the gun again, striking one man in the chest, the statement said.

Samora then ran away again, this time being pursued by a responding police officer. Samora jumped into the Platte River to evade the officer but was apprehended in the river at around 5 p.m., the statement said.

The two gunshot victims were taken to a hospital for their injuries. Their current conditions are unknown but the victim shot in the chest was in critical condition as of Sunday.
