Second shooter sentenced to 3 decades behind bars for 2016 murder of Aurora man
A second man was sentenced Tuesday in the 18th Judicial District Court to 30 years behind bars for the slaying of a 24-year-old Aurora man over an illegal marijuana sale.
In January, Jahlil Meshesa, 21, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Jahmar Leckman as a part of a plea agreement that dismissed other charges, according to a release from the 18th Judicial District Court.
“This murder was senseless: This victim was killed over a couple ounces of weed,” said Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Sugioka during a hearing on May 11. “The defendant is quite young, but he needs to learn from these lessons and take a different path. This sentence needs to be a deterrent.”
On Jan. 17, 2016, Leckman and two others drove to a parking lot to sell marijuana to a buyer he knew, near East Mississippi Avenue and South Peoria Street in west Aurora.
Leckman got out of his vehicle to meet with the buyer, but instead of the driver getting out of his dark SUV, he and the passenger fired at Leckman, according to a release.
Meshea and Prince Jalil White were later identified as the shooters. Jalil White pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years on May 22, 2020.
During the sentencing hearing on Tuesday, members of Leckman’s family, including his mother addressed the court.
“The pain will always be there, doorman like a tumor, waiting to rise up without wanting. I am angry that my son is gone, but I want to find it in my heart to forgive,” she told the court.
