Colorado missionary among two dead in north Texas car crash
A 20-year-old Colorado missionary serving in Texas for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died Tuesday in an automobile accident, just northwest of Dallas.
Elder Eli John Fowler, of Pueblo West, and Elder Luke Masakazu Carter, 18 of Springville, Utah, were the two passengers killed in the accident.
Carter and Fowler were serving as missionaries at the Texas Fort Worth Mission. Both joined the chapter in 2020, said Sam Penrod in a statement from the church.
Members of the Denton Police Department and Fire Rescue crews were dispatched shortly before 11 a.m. to a collision on East Sherman Drive and Farm to Market Road 2153 in northeast Denton, said Amy Cunningham, a public information officer for the department.
Carter and Fowler were pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the other vehicle was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
An initial investigation showed that a Ford F250 was going southbound on East Sherman Drive when it crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a Toyota Tacoma.
Carter was driving the Tacoma at the time of the collision, and both victims were wearing their seat belts, Cunningham said.
According to the an autopsy by the Denton County Medical Examiner’s Office, Fowler’s cause of death was determined to be from force blunt trauma due to a motor vehicle collision.
Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, but are investigating whether speed or weather contributed, Cunningham said.
The investigation is continuing.
