Costco in northeast Colorado Springs evacuated following gas odor
The northeast Colorado Springs Costco has been evacuated after multiple reports of a gas leak and an odor coming from the store.
Colorado Spring Fire Department crews were dispatched to the Costco at 5050 N. Nevada Ave around 5 p.m. Hazmat 14 crews were first to arrive on-scene and evacuated an undetermined amount of customers and employees, said Mike Smaldino, the public information officer for the department.
No injuries have been reported due to the odor, but 12 to 15 people were evaluated after indicating they have a headache. No one has been transported to the hospital, Smaldino said.
Following the evacuations, Hazmat crews walked through the store with their monitors and were unable to discover any gas. Currently, fire crews, Costco management, the utilities and the stores maintenance companies are working to recreate the earlier scenario.
“We don’t want to leave and then they turn everything back on and then it comes right back again,” Smaldino said.
Within an hour of crews attempting to recreate the scenario, officials located a leak in the stores water heater, Smaldino said.
Currently, Costco officials and its maintenance crews are working to fix the leak, and don’t anticipate to reopen until at least tomorrow morning.
