Armed domestic violence suspect surrenders after standoff with SWAT team in Aurora

An armed suspect in a domestic violence case was arrested Thursday morning after a multihour standoff with the Aurora Police Department SWAT team.

Police responded to the suspect’s home to arrest him on domestic violence charges about 6 a.m. in the 1800 block of South Truckee Street, next to Mrachek Middle School. The suspect was armed and refused to exit the house, police said.

A shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents in the Aurora Highlands area about 7 a.m.

Police tried to make contact with the suspect for more than two hours before using foam rounds to break out the house’s windows to help officers talk to the suspect about 8:20 a.m.

Just before 9 a.m., police announced the suspect peacefully exited the house.

Police said the suspect has been taken to a hospital as a precaution. Once he is cleared, the suspect will be booked into jail.

No one was injured during the standoff or arrest, police said. The identity of the suspect has not been released.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted; however, the investigation is ongoing and detectives will remain in the area to process the scene.
