Man with knife shot by Denver police dies

The man who was shot by a Denver police officer in the Harvey Park neighborhood Wednesday evening has died, police said.

This is the third person fatally shot by metro-area police departments in less than a week.

Denver officers were dispatched to South Federal Boulevard and West Harvard Avenue about 6:45 p.m. after a report of a stabbing and a man with a knife.

When officers arrived, they located the man and parked “a significant distance” away before getting out of their car and approached the man, said Denver Police Department Division Chief Ron Thomas during a Wednesday evening news conference.

The man allegedly displayed a knife and began advancing toward the officers, and disregarded the commands to drop the knife and stop advancing, police said.

Officers attempted to subdue the man by utilizing a pepperball and using a stun gun, but they had no effect, Thomas said.

As the man got closer, one of the officers fired their weapon multiple times and caused the man to drop to the ground.

He was taken to Denver Health Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Thomas said officials observed what is believed to be “self-inflicted” stab wounds on the man.

Information regarding the suspect has not been released.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The police department has activated its critical incident, officer-involved shooting protocol team, which initiates a multi-agency investigation into the incident, Thomas said.

This is the second critical incident investigation opened by Denver police in six days.

On May 14, multiple officers fired several rounds at a man who allegedly opened fired into the air at a park in the Westwood neighborhood.

The man led officers on a pursuit that crossed multiple jurisdictions, but ended it a crash at First Avenue and Perry Street.

When officers arrived, the man disregarded all commands and grabbed a handgun, which prompted several officers to fire their weapons.

On Tuesday, members of the Englewood Police Department fatally shot 22-year-old Caleb Jereme Grisenti after he injured three officers by dragging them with a stolen vehicle.
