I-70 mountain corridor to close near Dumont for rock scaling
Traffic will be stopped periodically this week on Interstate 70 in the mountain corridor as crews push loose rocks off the mountain slope above the highway.
The stops will occur just east of Dumont near Mile Point 236 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Each stop will last approximately 20 minutes and will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Once crews perform the rock scaling work and re-clear the highway, all stopped vehicles will be allowed to pass before another stop is implemented.
Drivers should expect delays of around 30 minutes.
These rock scaling efforts will end before the weekend in anticipation of increased traffic through Memorial Day; however, two more days of rock scaling will take place sometime in June, with similar periodic stops planned.
The work is expected to be completed before the Fourth of July.
This week’s rockfall mitigation work will help stabilize the slope where a 2019 rockslide prompted an emergency closure of I-70 the day after Thanksgiving.
The work schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.
