Icelandair resumes Denver flights to Reykjavik

It’s been more than a year, but Icelandair Monday resumed nonstop service from Denver International Airport to Europe.

The airline plans four flights per week on a Boeing 757-200, ramping up to five flights weekly starting mid-June.

“Iceland has recently opened its borders to all U.S. vaccinated travelers and Icelandair is excited to return to Denver with nonstop flights to Iceland,” said Grimur Gislason, regional manager Icelandair North America, in a statement. “As we approach nearly a decade of service from the Mile High City, we appreciate all of the support we have received over the years and we look forward to continue building a bright future together. The past year was a difficult time for many people and travel was affected greatly.”

Icelandair started serving Denver in 2012. It’s now one of three airlines, joining Lufthansa and United, offering nonstop service from Denver to Europe. Before the COVID-19 shut down all international travel at DIA April 1, 2020, Reykjavik, Iceland was among Denver travelers top 10 markets.

“Icelandair’s return not only signals the resurgence of international travel but also the importance of Denver and Colorado as a partner in building back a global network,” said DIA CEO Kim Day in a statement.

Vaccinated U.S. travelers, or those who can show a certificate of previous infection, can visit Iceland. Travel to the rest of Europe from Iceland is still off limits for Americans.
