State officials search for bear that wandered 100 miles away from habitat

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is asking for the public’s help in tracking down a young bear that wondered into the eastern plains, 100 miles from its normal habitat.

Parks officials said in a news release Wednesday that residents have reported seeing the sub-adult bear running south of Limon near Elbert County Road 90, and west of Highway 71 near Lincoln Country Road 3A.

The area is dry and rural, not a good place for bears accustomed to mountain environments, officials said. The plains lack the necessary food bears need to survive, such as nuts, berries, fruits and orbs.

The Limon area has not experienced a bear sighting in nearly two years, according to the release.

Officials reported they do not know how the bear got to the area but hope to get it out as soon as possible. Once the bear is located, officials will try to tranquilize the animal to move it to a more suitable habitat.

Anyone who sees the bear is asked to call their local Colorado Parks and Wildlife office or the general agency call line at 719-227-5200.
