Armed man shot by Denver police Sunday, dies
A man who was shot by two Denver Police Department officers after allegedly threatening them with an assault rifle Sunday has died, police said.
Denver officers were dispatched to a liquor store in the 1300 block of West Alameda Avenue after the clerk said a man threatened him with an assault rifle through the store’s drive thru window.
Two nearby officers responded and quickly located the suspect, identified only as a Black man, walking a block away from the original scene with an assault rifle.
Police said officers got out of their patrol units and began issuing commands to the suspect but he ignored them and began walking towards the officers, allegedly threatening them with the rifle, which prompted the officers to fire and strike the man with their weapons.
The man fell to the ground and was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
No officers or bystanders, including the liquor store clerk were injured during the incident.
The suspects identity has not been released.
The police department has activated its critical incident, officer involved shooting protocol team, which will initiate a multi-agency investigation into the shooting. Both officers have been placed on modified duty and will be throughout the investigation process.
This is the fifth officer involved shooting in the Denver-metro in May, and fourth fatal shooting since May 14.
The first shooting occurred on May 8 when an officer was shot in the leg by a man allegedly trespassing on someone’s porch. The officer survived and the man was later found and arrested.
On May 14, multiple officers fired several rounds at a man who allegedly opened fired into the air at a park in the Westwood neighborhood.
The man led officers on a pursuit that crossed multiple jurisdictions, but ended it a crash at First Avenue and Perry Street. When officers arrived, the man disregarded all commands and grabbed a handgun, which prompted several officers to fire their weapons.
Several days later, members of the Englewood Police Department fatally shot 22-year-old Caleb Jereme Grisenti after he injured three officers by dragging them with a stolen vehicle.
The most recent shooting happened on May 19, when an officer shot 52-year-old Raul Rosas-Zarsosa, who was approaching two DPD officers with a knife.
Police say the officers utilized 10 pepperballs and a Taser to subdue the man, but were unsuccessful and led to one officer firing multiple shots that struck the man.
