The trial of a former officer with the Lakewood Police Department accused of sexually assaulting a woman while on duty in 2018 started Tuesday in Denver District Court.

Former officer Randall Shaun Butler, 39, was charged with two counts of sexual assault for the incident that allegedly happened on Nov. 16, 2018, after he offered to drive a woman home in his patrol car.

After the incident became public, Butler was accused of two other sexual assaults dating back to 2014 that also began with him offering women rides while on duty.

He was charged with attempted sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact for those two incidents that will go to court at a later date.

According to the Denver District Attorney’s Office, the most recent victim had become stranded about 11 p.m. after getting into a fight with a friend at a bar. The woman walked to a nearby store to use the phone to call a ride but it did not work.

At this point, Butler is alleged to have pulled up to the woman in his patrol car and offered to drive her closer to her home. She accepted the offer and Butler drove her to an empty parking lot on Sheridan Boulevard between 25th Avenue and 26th Avenue, prosecutors said.

Butler then got out of the car to let the woman out of the back seat, at which point he allegedly asked for her phone number, forcibly kissed her and raped her in the back seat, the arrest affidavit said.

The woman told her mother what happened, went to a hospital and reported the alleged assault the next day using the Denver Police Department’s seekthenspeak.org, which helps victims of sexual assault report perpetrators and find resources.

Butler was placed on administrative leave and resigned from the Lakewood Police Department on Nov. 26, 2018. He had been with the department since 2013. Butler was arrested on Dec. 5, 2018.

The case will be prosecuted by Denver District Attorney Beth McCann and Assistant District Attorney Maggie Conboy.
