Armed robbery suspect fatally shot by police in Arvada

An armed robbery suspect died Wednesday morning after being shot by multiple Arvada police officers, the department announced.

Police said officers were responding to a reported armed robbery at the Target store at 7899 Wadsworth Blvd. at 8:35 a.m.

The suspect allegedly held a woman at gunpoint in the store parking lot using a long-barreled handgun and stole her purse, phone and vehicle, police said.

The suspect then drove off in the vehicle and crashed into a fire hydrant blocks away on Pomona Drive. When a passerby approached the suspect, the suspect threatened them with the gun as well, police said.

At 8:55 a.m., responding officers found the suspect sitting in the stolen vehicle at West 81st Place and Garland Drive, a neighborhood near Wood Run Park.

At that point, police said the suspect fired a shot at the officers and multiple officers fired back, killing the suspect at the scene.

No officers or victims were injured during the incident, police said.

Police have not released any information about the suspect’s identity.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.

This is the sixth officer involved shooting in the Denver-metro area since May, and fifth fatal officer-involved shooting since May 14.

The first shooting occurred on May 8 when a Denver officer was shot in the leg by a man allegedly trespassing on someone’s porch. The officer survived and the man was later found and arrested.

On May 14, multiple Denver officers fatally shot an armed man after a car chase. Police said the man was threatening officers after they were called on reports that the man was firing a gun in the air at a playground.

Several days later, members of the Englewood Police Department fatally shot 22-year-old Caleb Jereme Grisenti after he injured three officers by dragging them with a stolen vehicle.

On May 19, a Denver officer fatally shot 52-year-old Raul Rosas-Zarsosa, who was approaching two officers with a knife. Police say the officers unsuccessfully used 10 pepperballs and a stun gun to subdue the man before shooting.

The most recent shooting happened on Sunday when two Denver officers fatally shot 29-year-old Shannon Wright because he allegedly threatened the officers, and previously threatened a liquor store clerk, with an assault rifle.
