One person killed in multivehicle hit-and-run on I-25 near downtown Denver
One person was killed in a multivehicle crash and hit-and-run overnight on Interstate 25, the Denver Police Department said.
Police said the crash happened just after midnight Monday on northbound I-25 at 20th Street, near Coors Field. The incident began when three vehicles were involved in a minor crash and pulled over to asses the damage.
While some of the vehicles’ occupants were standing on the side of the road, an Acura approached and hit two of the already crashed vehicles, knocking one of the occupants to the ground.
When that occupant was on the ground injured, an unidentified car drove by and hit him again, killing him.
The driver of the Acura was arrested and is being held for DUI, careless driving and driving under restraint, police said. The driver of the unidentified car fled the scene and is still on the loose. The car is believed to be a Honda.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity will be released by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner after his family has been notified.
No one else was injured in the crash, police said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police are urging anyone with information to contact the police immediately at 720-337-1000. Police are also asking the driver of the Honda to turn themselves in.
Northbound I-25 was closed in the area for nearly four hours as police processed the scene.
