Police: Man firing in park had no clear motive

The Denver Police Department says a man who was fatally shot by officers on Friday had no clear motive when he began shooting rounds in a park in Northeast Park Hill.

Investigators have learned through various witnesses that the shooter, later identified as 31-year-old Colton Wagner, fired at at least three individuals inside of the park.

“We believe he was just shooting them,” said Matt Clark, commander of the major crimes division for the Denver Police Department, during a news conference Tuesday. “There was no prior knowledge between those individuals and that subject, they just happened to be in the area.”

Investigators have recovered 24 casings from a .45 caliber gun around the scene of the incident and located even more ammunition in Wagner’s vehicle, Clark said.

Friday’s incident began when officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Olive Street, near Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, just before 5:30 p.m. after six reports of a person shooting into a park, said Cmdr. Matt Clark, of the department’s major crimes unit.

Multiple callers told officers the man was standing near a grey Jeep.

As officers arrived in the area, one of the initial callers directed them to the east side of the park. At this time they located the suspect who was leaning into the front passenger side of the Jeep.

Officers parked 90 feet away and began directing Wagner to raise his hands.

During this process, they observed the man was armed with a handgun and began ordering him to drop the weapon.

Wagner instead took the handgun and placed the barrel against the side of his head, before briefly lowering it and walking towards officer. He then allegedly raised the weapon again, and three officers — with two handguns and a rifle — fired, Clark said.

“Given the information regarding the subject previously firing numerous rounds in the park, coupled with the subjects refusal to comply with the clear orders … the officers feared with the subject fired upon them,” Clark said.

Wagner fell to the ground and was quickly transported to Denver Health Medical Center where he later died.

No officers or bystanders were injured.

The police department has activated its critical incident, officer involved shooting protocol team, which will initiate a multi-agency investigation into the shooting.

This is the seventh — sixth fatal — officer involved shooting since the beginning of May.

The first shooting happened on May 8 when a Denver officer was shot in the leg by a man allegedly trespassing on someone’s porch. The officer survived the shooting, while the man was later found and arrested.

On May 14, multiple officers fired several rounds at a man who allegedly opened fired into the air at a park in the Westwood neighborhood.

The man led officers on a pursuit that crossed multiple jurisdictions, but ended in a crash at First Avenue and Perry Street. When officers arrived, the man disregarded all commands and grabbed a handgun, which prompted several officers to fire their weapons.

Several days later, members of the Englewood Police Department fatally shot 22-year-old Caleb Jereme Grisenti after he injured three officers by dragging them with a stolen vehicle.

On May 19, 52-year-old Raul Rosas-Zarsosa was shot five times by a Denver police officer while approaching her and her partner with a utility knife.

Another shooting happened on Sunday when two Denver officers fatally shot 29-year-old Shannon Wright because he allegedly threatened the officers, and previously threatened a liquor store clerk, with an assault rifle.

More recently, on June 1, a man was shot multiple times by Arvada police officers after a brief crime spree that included an armed robbery at Target, holding a woman at gunpoint, stealing a car and firing at officers.
