Small wildland fire near Gypsum forces Cottonwood Pass to close

Cottonwood Pass was closed after a small wildland fire broke out near Gypsum in Eagle County on Tuesday morning.

The road is closed from Gypsum and El Jebel as a safety precaution.

Crews began battling the blaze that was estimated to be smaller than one acre about 10:45 a.m. near Cottonwood Pass and the Red Hill area, according to a post by Eagle Valley Wildland on social media.

The United States Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management from the Upper Colorado River, two aircrafts and several agencies are on-scene, officials said.

Winds are between 10 and 15 mph and a small plume is visible from Gypsum. Officials said a majority of the smoke in the area is coming from wildfires in Arizona and New Mexico.

An afternoon update reported that “crews are reporting good progress at containing the fire … no update on size, but it does not appear to have grown significantly,” according to the Eagle Valley Wildlife post on Facebook.
