Fall opening set for hotel at old Emily Griffith school building

Hotel developer Stonebridge Companies plans a fall opening for its newest offering, which is being built in the abandoned 1926 school building that once housed the original Emily Griffith Opportunity School.

Dubbed The Slate Hotel, the 251-room hotel includes meeting and event space and is part of a larger development that includes retail and office space. Developers preserved the historic buildings on the 2.4-acre site at 1250 Welton St. across from the Convention Center.

The 4-story, 135,000-square-foot hotel will be part of the “Tapestry Collection” by Hilton Hotels.

“Denver has been home to Stonebridge Companies for 30 years, and since the project’s start, it’s been our privilege to play a role in honoring the legacy of the Emily Griffith Opportunity School and its vast impact on generations of Denver residents,” said Navin C. Dimond, founder, CEO and chairman of Stonebridge. “We’re delighted to work with longtime partner Hilton to launch The Slate Hotel, revitalizing an important piece of our city’s history.”

Work began at the site in 2019, after Denver Public Schools sold the site to Stonebridge Companies in 2017. The Emily Griffith school moved to the third floor of the tower at 1860 Lincoln St.

Zall Commercial Real Estate is listing the property, and describes it as such: “Honoring the entrepreneurial and compassionate spirit of famous Denver resident Emily Griffith, Emily’s Alley is an innovative collaboration aimed to serve broad reaches of the community.”

There’s 60,000 square feet of retail space and “opportunities for co-working and office” space.

“Historic design elements blended with modern amenities will offer inviting space for shopping, dining and meeting,” the listing states. “Ranging from large, barrel roofed spaces to small spaces lining the open-air paseo, Emily’s Alley is the central location for retailers, restaurateurs and first class local and international brands.”

Denver-based Stonebridge has a 65-hotel portfolio, which includes 30 in Colorado.
