Colorado wildfire roundup: Blazes around the state gain momentum as heat and wind increase
Various wildfires around the state experienced fast-paced growth Tuesday as high temperatures, gusty winds and dry vegetation fueled flames. The National Weather Service lifted some red flag warnings in western counties, but weather outlooks Wednesday includes high temperatures and gusty winds.
Here are some of the large, active wildfires burning throughout Colorado as of 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to the InciWeb Incident Information System.
Muddy Slide fire
- Size: 3,500 acres
- Containment: 0%
- Location: In the Gore Range, Routt National Forest
- Cause: Unknown
The Muddy Slide fire started about 3 p.m. Sunday. The fire’s growth exploded Tuesday, due to low humidity, warm temperatures and gusty winds. Pre-evacuations include County Road 16. As of Wednesday morning, 101 emergency responders were fighting the fire.

Oil Springs fire
- Size: 7,395 acres
- Containment: 0%
- Location: 20 miles south of Rangely
- Cause: Lightning
The Oil Springs fire began burning Friday afternoon and experienced “active fire behavior” Tuesday as winds stoked flames and dry vegetation fed the fire. Smoke was visible from Rangley and Meeker. Evacuations included County Road 116, County Road 27, County Road 28, County Road 120, County Road 26A, County Road 103 and County Road 128.
Sylvan fire
- Size: 3,583 acres
- Containment: Unknown
- Location: 16 miles south of Eagle
- Cause: Suspected lightning, under investigation
The Sylvan fire was first reported at 3:15 p.m. Sunday in the White River National Forest, near Sylvan Lake State Park. As of Wednesday morning, 130 emergency responders, along with a light and heavy helicopter, fought the fire. Crews worked to contain the fire along natural barriers.
Heavy smoke from the fire spread toward Eagle, Vail Gypsum, Yampa and Toponas, Colorado Department of Public Health tweeted.
Trail Canyon fire
- Size: 881 acres
- Containment: 80%
- Location: 10 miles northwest of Red Mesa, Colo.
- Cause: Lightning
The Trail Canyon fire started Friday about 5:15 p.m. Since Monday, 116 emergency responders were fighting the fire. Hot, dry conditions could exacerbate the fire’s growth but helicopters and air tankers aided firefighters to extinguish the blaze.
West fire
- Size: 3,107 acres
- Containment: Unknown
- Location: Middle Mountain in the northwest corner of Moffat County
- Cause: Suspected lightning, under investigation
The Bureau of Land Management is actively engaging Hotshot crews, two helicopters and 120 firefighters at the Wyoming border. The fire is burning heavy lodgepole pine, and no structures are threatened as of Tuesday afternoon.
