Man fatally stabbed in Westminster, suspect arrested after hourslong barricade
A Westminster man was arrested and charged Saturday night in connection to a homicide, the Westminster Police Department said.
Police said Kenneth Sargent, 60, was charged with first-degree murder after a fatal stabbing outside of his home near West 120th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard.
The arrest came after Sargent barricaded himself inside the home for several hours.
Police said a person called 911 about 1:15 p.m., saying they had witnessed a stabbing outside of a house at 3957 W. 118th Place. The caller said the male victim was lying on the porch and the stabber had gone back inside the house.
Paramedics took the victim to a hospital where he later died of his injuries, police said. The victim’s identity will be released after his family has been notified.
SWAT negotiators were brought in after police were unable to make contract with the suspect. Nearby houses were evacuated and the rest of the neighborhood was put under a shelter-in-place order, police said.
After several hours of attempting to contact the suspect, the SWAT negotiators convinced the suspect to surrender. The suspect, later identified as Sargent, surrendered peacefully about 8 p.m., police said.
Police have not released any information about what led to the stabbing or the relationship between Sargent and the victim.
The investigation is ongoing. No additional information is being released, police said.
