Thornton man arrested in connection to homicide of woman in Commerce City
A Thornton man has been arrested in connection with the homicide of a woman whose remains were found in a storage facility in Commerce City last month, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.
Deputies said 36-year-old Gregory Thomas was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and tampering with a deceased human body. Thomas is currently being held in the Adams County Detention Facility awaiting official charges.
Deputies believe Thomas is responsible for the death of a missing Commerce City woman. The woman’s remains were found on May 20 in a large trash bin inside of a storage unit facility in the 8700 block of Devonshire Boulevard.
The Adams County Coroner determined that the woman has been killed by a gunshot, deputies said.
After the discovery of the victim, deputies searched the home of the person who was renting the storage unit. This led them to discovery of “an additional crime scene” and collection of multiple pieces of evidence that pointed them to Thomas, deputies said.
By the time deputies identified Thomas as a murder suspect, he had already fled the state to Washington. On June 6, Thomas was found in a Washington RV park and arrested for an outstanding parole violation.
Thomas was then extradited to Colorado where he was arrested again on a warrant for the murder, deputies said.
The case is currently under review for a possible filing of charges by the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. The investigation is ongoing and further arrests and charges are possible, deputies said.
According to public records, Thomas has an extensive criminal history dating back to 2005 with most of his charges being for theft, burglary and forgery.
