4 Aurora officers on leave after seriously injuring suspect in domestic violence arrest
Four Aurora police officers have been placed on administrative leave after a domestic violence arrest led to the serious injury of the suspect, the police department announced Wednesday.
Police said the incident happened Monday just after 6 p.m. when the officers responded to a 911 call at the InTown Suites hotel at 14090 E. Evans Ave. The caller told police there was a physical domestic violence dispute between a man and a woman.
The officers found the woman victim in the lobby with obvious injuries, police said. When officers approached the man in a hotel room, he was “uncooperative and armed with a metal object,” police said.
The officers said they tried to de-escalate the situation without success. They then shot the suspect with a stun gun, which had no effect, and fired a “less-lethal shotgun” at the suspect, also without effect.
The officers then physically grabbed the suspect and pulled him into the hallway and on the ground, where they handcuffed him. The suspect was taken to a hospital by paramedics for treatment. One of the officers also received treatment for minor injuries.
On Tuesday, investigators determined that a round from the “less-lethal shotgun” penetrated the man’s abdomen, causing serious injuries. The man is expected to survive, police said.
Because of the severity of the injuries, Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson asked the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident.
All four of the officers involved in the arrest were placed on administrative leave, as is the police department’s policy for investigations. All of the officers were wearing activated body cameras during the incident, which will be reviewed, police said.
