Brighton High School postponed its annual homecoming dance Saturday after police received a tip about a potential shooting at the event.
Principal Shelly Genereux announced the postponement on Facebook at 4 p.m., hours before the dance was scheduled to begin. Genereux said there was a “potential threat to the safety and security of students” at the dance.
Brighton Police Chief Paul Southard said someone submitted a tip about a drive-by shooting at the dance through Safe2Tell, Colorado’s anonymous safety tip line for students.
Police have not yet confirmed or denied the credibility of the threat, but the school chose to postpone the dance out of “an abundance of caution,” Genereux said in the Facebook post.
“Student safety always takes priority in our decisions,” Genereux said. “I am personally saddened by this decision, and I can only imagine the sadness of our students.”
The school is working with the Brighton Police Department to investigate the threat.
The homecoming dance will be rescheduled, Genereux said, but no date has been set. Students who purchased tickets to Saturday’s dance will be able to use the tickets to attend the rescheduled dance.
