Israel lifts surrogacy ban for LGBT community and single men
Same-sex couples, single men, and transgender individuals are permitted to have children via surrogacy in Israel, according to a Tuesday announcement.
“It is a historic day for the LGBTQ struggle in Israel,” Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz said.
Israel’s Health Ministry sent out a circular allowing equal access to surrogate pregnancy, Horowitz announced.

The LGBT community in Israel has sought a change in the law surrounding surrogacy access for years, and Tuesday’s announcement is the product of the nation’s highest court ruling to end a ban on the practice, according to a report.
The court ruled in July of 2020 to lift the surrogacy ban for same-sex couples and single men, the report noted.
The practice had been an available option for single women and straight couples.
The ban “disproportionately harmed the right to equality and the right to parenthood,” the court ruled.
The new law is set to go into effect on Jan. 11, according to the report.
“A week from today, we will also give equal access to surrogacy in Israel to single men, future fathers, as well as [male] homosexual couples — actually, to any individual. Today we are issuing the director general’s new circular, which enshrines the High Court ruling and revises the procedures in the law,” Horowitz said.
