Firefighter injured, fire truck damaged after being struck by vehicle
A firefighter was injured early Thursday when a vehicle crashed into a fire truck, according to the South Adams County Fire Department.
Crews responded just before 4 a.m. to a vehicle collision along Interstate 76 between 74th and 88th avenues. While responding, Truck 24 was hit by another vehicle.
“Had the fire truck not been there, the entire crew would’ve been hit and probably wouldn’t have made it,” said Maria Carabajal, a spokeswoman for the department.
Carabajal said the vehicle that struck the fire truck was likely stolen. The driver and a passenger fled the scene on foot, while another passenger stayed in the back seat due to injuries.
The firefighter injured in the crash was taken to a hospital, where he had staples put in his head, Carabajal said. He has since been released from the hospital.
The fire truck sustained damage, but officials did not say how severe the damage was.
As of Thursday morning, authorities had not released information about the suspects.
