Lakewood officer who stopped fatal rampage released from hospital

The Lakewood police officer who was hailed as a hero for stopping a fatal rampage last week was released from the hospital on Thursday.

Officer Ashley Ferris was shot in the abdomen by a gunman who killed five people during a rampage that spanned Denver and Lakewood on Dec. 27.

After she was wounded and while down, Ferris returned fire, hitting the gunman and ending the rampage. She underwent emergency surgery on the day of the shooting and had been recovering with her family at the hospital since.

“She will continue her recovery and has the complete love & support of her family, friends, our agency & police family, city & community,” officials with the Lakewood Police Department posted on Twitter on Thursday evening.

A video posted by the department showed Ferris being wheeled out of the hospital with nurses and other hospital workers clapping and showing their support. Once outside, she took off her mask and smiled and waved to everyone there to support her.
