Colorado Rapids bring back a pair of veteran defenders

Veterans are back on Colorado Rapids’ back line.

The club announced the return of defenders Drew Moor and Steven Beitashour on Friday. After not appearing in the stop-and-start 2020 season, Beitashour, a 34-year-old outside back, made six starts and 11 appearances last season, recording two assists to help the Rapids finish the regular season at the top of the Western Conference standings.

“Steven is one of the most decorated and experienced defenders in our league,” Rapids executive vice president and general manager Pádraig Smith said in a team release. “His leadership and versatility contributed greatly to our conference-topping season in 2021 and we look forward to welcoming him back for another year in Burgundy.”

Moor, a 37-year-old center back, started one match last season, appearing in 12. He’s played in Major League Soccer since 2005, made his first appearance for the Rapids in 2009 and was part of Colorado’s 2010 MLS Cup-winning squad.

“Few players are as emblematic of our club as Drew,” Smith said in a separate release. “His championship experience and leadership both on and off the field have been in an invaluable asset for us since rejoining the team so we’re delighted to have him back with us for another year.”

The veteran defenders also helped FC Toronto win an MLS Cup in 2017 with Rapids coach Robin Fraser serving as an assistant. Moor (United States) and Beitashour (Iran) also have experience representing their respective national teams. Both players signed one-year contracts with an option for a second season, according to the Rapids release.

“So thankful to continue to do what I love!” Beitashour posted on Twitter after his new contract was announced.

“No place I’d rather be,” Moor tweeted.
