Rep. Dave Joyce tapped to be chairman of key centrist House GOP group

Rep. Dave Joyce (R-OH) on Wednesday was unanimously elected to be the new chairman of the centrist Republican Governance Group, formerly known as the Tuesday Group.

Joyce, who was first elected to the House in 2012, is replacing Rep. John Katko (R-NY), who is set to retire at the end of this term.

KATKO ENDORSES JOYCE TO SUCCEED HIM AS HEAD OF CENTRIST HOUSE REPUBLICAN GROUP

Katko, who endorsed Joyce for the position, opted to step down early as chairman to allow the group to prepare for the 118th Congress.

Joyce has developed a reputation for being an affable deal-maker with strong relationships with members on both the Right and the Left.

“I’m honored to be able to represent such a fine group of legislators and make sure that our voices are heard in this session and in the next,” he said after the election, adding that Republicans are hoping not just to have a majority in the next Congress, “but a working majority.”

“He’s going to be great. Fantastic,” Katko said of his successor.

Rep. Blake Moore (R-UT) is slated to serve as vice chair of the group alongside Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA), who already holds the position.

If Republicans take back the House, the group is expected to play a key role in working to strike agreements that can pass both chambers.
