AMC hosts $5 Grease showing to honor late Olivia Newton-John
AMC announced Thursday it will be showing Grease this weekend beginning Friday to honor Olivia Newton-John.
The theater’s CEO Adam Aron made the announcement via Twitter 10 days after Newton-John died at the age of 73. Newton-John is known, among other things, for starring opposite John Travolta in the movie musical Grease, in which she played Sandy Olsson.
“To honor the late Olivia Newton-John: many of our U.S. theatres this weekend will show her classic 1978 hit movie Grease, again on the big screen,” Aron wrote. “An inexpensive $5 admission price, and through our charity AMC Cares we will donate $1 per sold ticket to breast cancer research.”

Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. In the 30 years she lived with the diagnosis, the actress established the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund to research plant medicinal options for cancer. Her family asked for donations to the fund instead of flowers for her funeral.
Grease is one of the highest-grossing live-action musicals worldwide. To date, the film and its various re-releases have earned over $396 million. The film’s original soundtrack landed four singles in the Billboard Top 10 and sold 13 million copies in its first year alone.
