Tax rebate 2022: South Carolina residents have until mid-October to claim up to $700 check
The deadline is fast approaching for South Carolina residents to file their tax returns so they can receive rebates totaling up to $700 by the year’s end.
State lawmakers approved a bill laying out the parameters for a tax rebate in June. Eligible taxpayers can have up to the extension deadline of Oct. 17 to file their state individual income tax return for 2020. Rebate checks will be rolled out by the end of the year.

To qualify, applicants must file the tax return by the deadline, have a tax liability for 2021, and must be a resident of South Carolina. The cap for payments is set at $700, and residents can calculate their return by heading to the website of the South Carolina Department of Revenue.
“When referring to this year’s rebate, you are considered as having tax liability if you owe state Individual Income Tax for the year 2021. The amount of your tax liability is determined by the amount of Individual Income Tax you owe, minus any credits,” the agency says.
Checks can come via direct deposit, debit card, or in the mail, depending on one’s arrangement with the Department of Revenue.

The rebates were included in a $13.8 billion budget bill that cleared the state legislature back in June. The rebates were projected to cost roughly $1 billion, according to the Associated Press.
Officials are hoping to dole out all the rebates by December.
