Southwest Airlines getting back to normal after holiday, ice storm meltdown

Friday morning, Southwest Airlines had 2,300 fewer cancellations than it did for each of the past nine days.

According to the website FlightAware.com, which tracks aviation daily movement, Southwest had 40 cancellations Friday morning as compared to around 2,350 Thursday.

The holiday meltdown saw the company cancel a total of around 20,000 flights. Airline insiders say the company may lose as much as $650,000,000, although a Southwest Airlines’ spokesperson said it’s too early to gage the financial impact of the debacle.

Also for the first time in nine days, Denver International Airport is not at the top of the worldwide cancellation list for airports — mostly due to the fact that Southwest Airlines is getting back on track.

At one time, there were 10,000 tagged bags sitting in the DIA luggage carrousel area. Thursday night, that number was shrinking, but Southwest officials said: “while we don’t have specific bag numbers by city, our teams are working around-the-clock to reunite customers with their baggage. Customers who haven’t yet received their bags can visit southwest.com/baginfo.”

The fallout from cancellations started Dec. 21 when a deep freeze settled into Colorado at around 4 pm and temperatures continued to fall into the sub-zero range. A problem with crew rescheduling software started a snarl which cancelled flights and left millions of passengers stranded over the holidays.

Southwest Airlines Pilots Association 2nd Vice President Tom Nekouei said it has been the “worst week in our history without external factors since 9-11 and COVID…and it was 99% self-inflicted,” he said. “It’s sad.”

Nekouei said that how fast Southwest Airlines reacts and reinvests back into the company will determine whether it will “emerge as a better airline.”

Southwest has apologized to its customers and announced a travel disruption webpage.
