McCarthy taps three conservatives for powerful House Rules Committee

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced on Monday he tapped two conservatives who held out on him getting the gavel, Reps. Ralph Norman (R-SC) and Chip Roy (R-TX), to serve on the powerful House Rules Committee.

The addition of Norman, Roy, and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who did not vote against McCarthy, to the panel is expected to move it in a more conservative direction. Every major piece of legislation has to go through the committee before coming to the floor for a vote.

During the course of negotiations between McCarthy and the Republican defectors during the historic four-day speaker vote, he conceded to conservatives’ push to put more hardliners on the top committees.

Roy previously told The Mark Levin Show that the new representation will “help control that we get good bills to the floor and advance conservative bills for the American people.”
